Hi,
At this time of year when it is so cold, there is a great demand for volunteers in homeless shelters to serve food to people who have nowhere to live. As said in the other replies, it depends where you are.
In London there is an organisation caled Action For Children - Families Centre which recruits volunteers to serve food and look after children among other things. The process isn't that easy though - you will be interviewed, will have to fill in an application and have a CRB check (this means a check that you have no criminal convictions - it's because you'll be working with children). It would be a great place to meet people and to help others in difficult situations - the centre is a drop-in for families who are homeless, in danger of becoming homeless, on low income, refugees or asylum seekers in the Westmenster area. Its address is
14-18 Newton Road
London
W2 5LT
Telephone number is
020 7221 3290
Hope this helps.
