Home Sweet Home
Home Sweet Home
On May 9th 2011, a photography exhibition entitled Home Sweet Home was launched. A joint venture involving Women for Refugee Women and Women Asylum Seekers Together, the exhibition sheds light on the experiences of women seeking asylum in the UK.
Following a series of photography tutorials, women took their own photographs. The pictures capture moments of every day life, depicting imagery that is both meaningful and relevant to them.
One striking example was an image entitled Shadow, a snapshot of a woman’s foot on the pavement. The accompanying caption read: I have no place to live and no money. I have nothing except what people give me out of a charity. I walk the streets in the day. Today the weather is nice so it’s ok, but some days the weather is so bad and I have nowhere to go. On days like those it is easy to feel hopeless and lost.
The exhibition is both moving and powerful. It draws out some of the key issues affecting women asylum seekers in the UK, including fear destitution and isolation.
Members of the public are encouraged to book the exhibition for display in their local communities. For more information on this, please email wast[at]womankind.org.uk.
