How can I stop my son falling in with the wrong crowd?

My son who is sixteen has recently started spending time with some people I do not approve of. He is skipping school and I am worried they might influence him into trying drugs. His father left me a few years ago and my son does not listen to me. Is there any advice anyone can give as to how I can deal with this. I think it is really important that he does well at school so he can have a good future.
