An urgent plea for Selina
An urgent plea for Selina
Selin
a Adda and her two children, Brian (10) and Chelsea (6), face deportation this Wednesday, January 27th. They are currently being held at Yarl’s Wood detention centre near Bedford.
Despite living in Nottingham for five years and completing a nursing qualification, Selina will be deported back to Ghana where she will be forced into an arranged marriage. She and her daughter may also be at risk of female genital mutilation, a practice common to her betrothed’s tribe.
The court rejected Selina’s application for asylum on the basis of insufficient evidence. Yet, there is substantial evidence to support her claim. Her mother has been threatened with death if Selina is not found, and her sister, who was accepted as a substitute wife, committed suicide before going through with the arranged marriage. Also, a recent advert appeared in a Ghanaian newspaper offering to reward those with knowledge of her whereabouts.
