SMILE Project – Research Seminar (Leeds)

SMILE Project – Research Seminar (Leeds)

Event Date:
Tuesday, 23 February 2010

SMILE (Supporting and Mentoring in Learning and Education) is holding a free seminar to introduce their work and research findings on the impact of education on refugee children.

SMILE is part of the Children’s Section of the Refugee Council and is currently based in London, Leeds and Birmingham. It is also funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The organisation aims to reduce the isolation experienced by so many child refugees, by supporting them to access education and after school activities. It also works to promote inclusive education by challenging prejudices related to asylum and raising awareness of the needs of refugee children.

Through its research, SMILE also intends to influence policy and practice to mainstream the support required for refugee children in order to make a difference to the future of this vulnerable group.

The seminar aims to:
-Introduce SMILE’s work and practice model
-Explain their research findings
-Discuss solutions and recommendations to policy makers

This seminar will be held between 2.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. at the Albert Room, Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 3AD.
